"Fan Fictions" (2008)

At the time I was writing (2007), I was intrigued by both "fan fiction" as an emerging genre and the curious intensity of the Twilight phenomenon. My story was also inspired by two other short stories I'd read in high school: "Umney's Last Case" by Stephen King and "The Kugelmass Episode" by Woody Allen. (Maybe a pinch of Tuck Everlasting thrown in for good measure.) I've received a great deal of feedback about this story -- positive and negative -- and all I can really say in response is that I don't think a short story is meant to do the same thing as a novel, so I took the opportunity to experiment.
